Before you can travel outside the country, you will have to be in possession of two important documents – your international passport and your travel visa. Without both, you can not travel out of the country, at least not legally. The international passport serves the same purpose as your national identity card – shows that you are a citizen of SA – but on an international level. Without the international passport, it would be impossible to tell the country you belong to. In most cases, the international passport comes with a picture of your face, your name, and other details.

The travel visa is another document that is required by immigration officials if you are to travel to another country. The travel visa often comes attached to your international passport or as a separate document. It tells of your purpose of visit to a country, the places you can visit while in the country and the length of your visit. The travel visa also specifies whether you can work in a country or not. Obtaining a visa to some countries sometimes can be really difficult as the visa policies are often very strict. The stricter visa policies are due in part to prevent immigrants from impoverished countries from flocking into more economically developed countries in search of better opportunities, placing a strain on many countries’ healthcare systems and other social services. However, many countries have bilateral agreements in place to waive visa requirements altogether for visitors intending to stay for brief periods of time.

During international travels, it is necessary that you are in possession of both the travel visa and the international passport before you can leave your country. However, with a special agreement between the government of two or more countries, members of both countries can move freely between each country without obtaining a document stating the purpose of visit – the travel visa. With only the international passport, members can move freely and stay in the foreign country for a specific period of time before they can return to their country or if they wish to extend their time of stay after the expiration of the visa-free period, they could easily apply for and obtain a visa permitting them to remain in the country.

South African Passport Visa Free Countries
